Communiqué

We received hundreds of applications to participate in the African Summit on Female Genital Mutilation and Child Marriages (16-18 June 2019) in Dakar, Senegal.

In total, more than 400 such diverse and interesting profiles have been registered via our platform https://www.africa4girls2030.org. We are honoured by your enthusiasm for this project led by Africa for the world.

A thorough selection had to be made and it was not an easy task for the Selection Committee. They had great difficulty in selecting future participants, which delayed sending notifications until the last week of April. To date, all selected participants have received their notification. Their participation will be covered by the organisers.

We hope that those who cannot be present with us in Dakar will follow the sessions live and share their ideas using the hashtag #Africa4Girls2030 so that this Summit can have a real impact on ending female genital mutilations and child marriages.

The enthusiasm shown gives us hope and confirms the continent's determination to put an end to these practices that are harmful to girls and women. We firmly believe that together we will eliminate FGM and child marriages in Africa by 2030.

The Organising committee is available to provide any information you may require. Please contact us at [email protected]

Petition Victory — Over the past few months, more than 220,000 of you have signed this petition, urging the American government to end the practice of female genital mutilation (FGM) in the United States, and commission a prevalence report on FGM’s impact on women and girls. Because of your voice, the U.S. has acted.
At a summit on FGM and child marriage in London, the Obama administration announced it would conduct a major study into FGM to establish how many women are living with the consequences of FGM in the United States and how many girls are at risk. Not only that, but the administration said they would create a preliminary working group on FGM, with a mission of measuring the extent of FGM in the United States and coming up with concrete plans to tackle it.
This could not have happened without your support. Today, we stand more than 220,000 people strong from all over the globe. And we can say that our voices -- along with those at The Guardian and Equality Now -- helped compel the Obama administration to act.
